Choosing a new tumble dryer

Sometimes a repair isn’t worth it. If that’s the case, here’s what to look for. The German brands we work with only make freestanding dryers. There are three types to choose from.

Changes to tumble dryers from January 2027

From 19 January 2027, new tumble dryers sold in Great Britain must meet stricter energy efficiency rules. New vented dryers won’t meet them, so they’re being phased out. Heat pump dryers are the most efficient option.

A condenser dryer doesn’t need to be by any plumbing and can be placed anywhere.

The water is evaporated and taken to a draw that you empty. You can plumb a condenser dryer to a drain if possible.

A standard condenser dryer is normally a B in energy efficiency.

Heat Pump Dryers:

A heat pump dryer reuses warm air instead of heating new air for every cycle. It uses much less electricity than a standard condenser dryer. Drying takes a little longer, but it’s gentler on clothes. Like a condenser dryer, it doesn’t need a vent or to be near an outside wall.

A vented dryer needs to be placed on an external wall and has a hose that exhausts
the heat and steam from the dryer.

A vented dryer tends to dry clothes quicker but is the least energy efficient out of all dryers.

It is normally a C in energy efficiency.
